Prepare for your Care

Before any appointment, you will be assessed by a Clinical Physiologist. This may be done in advance of your test or on the test day itself. All test results will be reviewed by the consultant who will explain them to you during your follow-up appointment.

• Have something to eat within two hours before the appointment to avoid periods of low blood sugar which may produce changes in EEG
• Arrive in good time with clean hair, free from grease, hair spray, hair gels etc.
• Wear comfortable clothing and an open necked, front opening shirt
• Bring a list of current medication with you

Before any appointment, you will be assessed by a Clinical Physiologist. This may be done in advance of your test or on the test day itself. All test results will be reviewed by the consultant who will explain them to you during your follow-up appointment.

• Your hands and feet need to be warm as the coldness may slow down the velocity of impulses. It is sensible to wear gloves in the winter when coming for the test. Your hand and feet still may need to be warmed up
• Avoid wearing moisturiser for 24 hours prior to the appointment
• Wear loose- fitting clothing to allow easy access to the arms well above the elbows and legs up to the mid thigh
• Please remember to bring a list of all the prescription medicines you take on the day of your test
• Let your consultant know if you suffer from any allergies
• You may eat in advance of your test, but we suggest a light meal only

Please tell your consultant if you have:

• A bleeding problem (haemophilia or low platelets) or take blood thinning medications, such as warfarin or aspirin. We may request your INR (blood clot test) results
• A contagious skin disease
• A pacemaker
• Are HIV or Hepatitis B positive

None of these are contraindications for the test except that a needle EMG will not be performed if there is a severe bleeding tendency.

Where possible, your assessment, tests and post-test analysis will be arranged consecutively on the same day. All test results are reviewed by the Consultant Audio Vestibular Physician. Your Audio Vestibular testing time will include a number of different tests which may take up to 2.5 hours. The following advice concerns a number of Audio Vestibular tests, however, when you book your appointment you may receive more detailed information.

Medications

• Certain medications may affect the results of the testing and should therefore be avoided for at least 48 hours prior to your testing. Ask your Audio Vestibular Physician for further details on what medication you may keep taking, and which to avoid
• Remember to bring a list of all the prescription medicines you take on the day of your test

Eating & Drinking

• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your test
• You may eat in advance of your test, but we suggest a light meal only
• Let us know if you suffer from any allergies

What do I wear?

• Please arrive in good time with eye make-up removed and hair free from hair spray and gels
• Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes and socks. Women should wear trousers rather than dresses or skirts
• Avoid wearing high neck clothing, as some tests require electrodes to be taped to the shoulders, forehead, and neck

Pre-existing problems

• For ear examinations, if you have a problem with excess wax, you will need to have this removed professionally before your test. GP’s will do this free of charge. If you decide to have this done at your appointment, please note that there will be an additional charge
• If you have severe neck problems that may prevent you from performing the test, please make the audiologist aware

Going home after the test

• Have someone accompany you home in the event you need assistance due to dizziness. Please note that we will not be able to discharge you alone if you are feeling unwell

Before any appointment, you will be assessed by a WNC Neurology Consultant. This may be done in advance of your test or on the test day itself. All test results will be reviewed by the Consultant who will explain them to you during your follow-up appointment.

No preparation is needed but if you wear reading glasses please ensure you bring them with you. The assessment may last for up to 3 hours.
